Whale Diaper Cover


Small amounts of worsted weight yarn in 2 colors

    Color A: Caron One Pound Solids in Cape Cod

    Color B: Light blue

White worsted weight yarn

Safety eyes

4.5 mm hook

sewing needle

A small amount of stuffing (optional)


Chain stitch – ch

Single crochet- sc

Double crochet – sc

Half double crochet – hdc

Treble crochet – tr

Slip stitch – sl st

Foundation single crochet – Fsc

Single crochet 2 together- Sc2tog

Magic circle- MC


– Chain stitches do not count as stitches

– The body is made from the bottom up



Using Color A

1- Fsc 10 (10)

2- Ch 1 and turn, 2 sc, sc 8, 2 sc (12)

3- Ch 1 and turn, 2 sc, sc 10, 2 sc (14)

4- Ch 1 and turn, sc across (14)

5- Repeat row 4 (14)

6- Ch 1 and turn, sc 10 (10) (leave the remaining row unworked)

7- Ch 1 and turn, sc2tog, sc 6, sc2tog (8)

8- Ch 1 and turn, sc 6, sc2tog (7)

9- Ch 1 and turn, sc2tog, sc 5 (6)

10- Ch 1 and turn, sc2tog, sc 2, sc2tog (4)

11- Ch 1 and turn, sc2tog, sc2tog (2)

Tie off


Using Color A

1- Flip body over and attach yarn from 2nd stitch from the end, sc in same stitch, sc (2)

2- Ch 1 turn, sc across (2)

3-4- Repeat row 2

Tie off

Tail Fin

Using Color A, make 2

1- Ch 8, sc in 2nd stitch from hook, hdc, dc, tr, dc, hdc, sc (7)

2- Ch 2 and work down the other side: sc, hdc, dc, tr, dc, hdc, sc

Tie off


Using White

1- Create mc

2- Work 6 sc into mc (6)

3- Sl st into first sc

Tie off


Using Color B

1- Ch 5, sc into 2nd ch from hook, hdc, dc, dc (4)

2- Ch 2 and work down other side: dc, dc, hdc, sc

Water Spout

Using Color B

1- Wrap yarn around 3 of your fingers 6-7 times

2- Knot the ends together

3- Cut a small piece of yarn and tie it around the looped yarn in between in your second and third finger

Tie off


– Sew one whale body to the back of your diaper cover

– Sew one tail fin at a time just to the 2 sc of the tail (this will leave the top of the fins to be able to curl off the diaper cover)

– Sew the water spout to the top of the head

– Sl st around the second body

– Sew the fin on the second body (once again sew just the tip to the body so the rest can curl up)

– Sew the eye onto the second boy

– Insert safety eye into eye

– Sew the second body to the first

Optional: When the second body is sewn ¾ way around the first, lightly stuff
