Reindeer Advent Calendar

Now that Halloween is over we can finally move on to what’s really important now… CHRISTMAS! Last year I made the ornaments for an advent calendar but ran out of time for the wall hanging. So first thing on my Christmas crochet list this year was to design my own advent calendar piece! I love the simplicity and enjoyed the color changing work to make this reindeer advent calendar come to life.

Don’t let the color changing scare you! It’s all single crochet so you’ve got this! I’ve attached the link to the graph and on stitchfiddle.com you can print the chart in 4 parts to make it easier to use and see.

Materials

Reindeer Wall Hanging:

2 skeins of Caron Simply Soft White

1 skein of Caron Simply Soft Taupe (This color is difficult to find in stores so brown would work just as well.)

1 skein of Caron Simply Soft Autumn Red

6.5mm hook

2.5 ” Pom Pom Maker

3/8 ” Dowel (I purchased the 36″ long dowel from Michaels and cut it down)

Twine

Small ornament hooks

Ornaments:

Less than 1 skein of Pumpkin, Autumn Red, Brown, Robins Egg, Dark Sage, White, and Gold Caron Simply Soft (Or whatever colors you’d like for your ornaments! This is a great project to use up your pile of scrap yarn.)

3.5mm hook

Sizing

The reindeer wall hanging is 24″x18″ and the ornaments are about 2-2.5″.

Abbreviations

Chain stitch – ch

Single crochet – sc

Notes

– The ch 1 at the end of each row counts as the first stitch

– I will be using abbreviations W and B for white and brown when talking about the colors

– This is the EASIEST method to change color and continue carrying the yarn. This video shows you how to carry, drop and pick up the second color.

– The number in asterisks * * is how many stitches to carry the brown after you switch back to white for the last time. This makes it a clean color change on the next row.

– The number in the brackets [ ] is how many stitches to carry the brown to the left when starting a new row. This only happens a few times when the brown begins inside of where it was dropped the row before

– To open the chart in stitchfiddle.com click HERE and select “Open With Stitch Fiddle” on the bottom.

* Note this picture of the graph is focused on the reindeer head and 2 of the rows on the right side and 11 rows on the bottom have been cut off to be able to see the whole image.

Pom Pom

Using Autumn Red make a pom pom. I used my 2 1/2″ Clover pom-pom maker. Thread the two ends through the base of the nose and secure in the back.

Ornaments

The ornaments used in this project are not my designs, I used a lot from the Cookie Snob that you can find HERE. Searched Pinterest and Ravelry for Christmas appliques and ornament patterns. I used the same size hook for all the ornaments to get them to be roughly the same size.

I chose to do 24 different pieces but you could also do 24 of the same ornament! There is a lot of creative freedom here with colors, sizes, and ornaments.

Assembly

Cut a piece of yarn or twine around 20″ or however long you’d like to hang it. Use a needle and thread it several stitches in on one side around the dowel. Tie a knot to secure and repeat on the other side. Use small ornament hooks to hang an ornament to the reindeer’s antlers every day in December!

Now you’re ready to countdown to Christmas!
